Spring is right around the corner, and gardeners everywhere are dreaming of amazing Tomatoes...not the hopeless cardboard imposters found in most grocery stores, but fabulous, full-flavored, homegrown Heirlooms with all their quirky names, odd shapes, rainbow of colors, and incredible range of sweet, fruity, spicy, smoky flavors.
As you all know, Alex and I closed the Nursery at the end of 2021, but Spring always seems to call me back! There's just something about sowing LOTS of seeds at the beginning of the New Year that I can't seem to "retire" from. But no, we're not re-opening... We did, however, decide to throw a weekend "Two Dog Tomato Party" offering ONLY Tomatoes - 44 varieties of them! Big ones, little ones, every color possible. Of the 44 varieties, 14 are "New" to our 2024 list. We try to cover every color and type, from cherries to beefsteaks, paste to tomatillos, and each part of the growing season (See Tomatoes by Season to plan for successive harvesting), so that all our customers can find what they're looking for!
The event will be at our home base, as always:
Saturday, March 23rd & Sunday, March 24th
10am until 4pm
914 S. Cloverdale Ave.
Los Angeles 90036
** Please plan to bring your OWN BOX OR FLAT, and feel free to invite your friends or community garden members. Start saving boxes now!
** Street Parking is available, and we will accept CASH & VENMO ONLY.
** As is tradition, Cookies and Lemonade will be served!
** No Pre-Ordering (please don't ask 🙏)
** If we don't sell out, I'll announce an additional Tomato Party Day!
IMPORTANT UPDATE REGARDING OUR "CERTIFIED ORGANIC" STATUS:
I held onto our CCOF Certified status for the first year and a half after we closed, but it became unrealistic and overly expensive to maintain for just a single possible Pop Up per year. It broke my heart, but I had to let it go (seriously, I cried). I tried, unsuccessfully, to "pause" our status, kind of like the DMV allows you to file a "Planned Non-Op" on a vehicle you're not using, but they don't offer such a thing; interestingly, the California Organic Program DID allow me to "suspend" my account.
But the important thing is this: I promise you all, I have in no way changed the way I do production. I'm following the same rules, complying with the same materials requirements, and I'm keeping all the records as I always have. It means that much to me. And IF I wanted to become Certified again, CCOF would audit everything I've been doing in the meanwhile, anyway.
Following are the 2024 selections; all the related Tomatoes pages have been updated, but not the other pages (Veggies, Herbs, etc.), because they're not pertinent at this time. I hope you are excited about the line-up and begin to make your "list" now.
Many tomato lovers say this little beauty rivals the famous Sun Gold, and it's one of our top sellers every year! It's a family Heirloom which produces loads of small apricot colored Cherry fruits that burst with fruity sweet, robust flavors. For us, it cracked less than Sun Gold, and we're happy to offer it again in 2024!

Very Rare! The seeds for this special Paste tomato were given by a Mr. Amos Coli to our supplier at the 2012 Heirloom Expo. Mr. Coli had grown this large, meaty variety for 59 of his 86 years and was looking to pass the torch. It's a true California Heirloom with a history of at least 120 years in this state! The fruits are shiny red and plump with great balanced flavors, perfect for fresh eating, sauces, canning and they freeze great. It's always a monster in our garden, and we absolutely love it!

TOMATILLOS
TOMATILLO VERDE
70 Days. Heirloom.
This is the hugely popular Mexican husk tomato, used to make delicious, traditional Salsa Verde. Rangy plants produce large yields of beautiful green 2-3” fruits. It’s enchanting to watch as the delicate husks form in the shape of a Chinese lantern; then the tomatillo develops inside the lantern, filling it up until it bursts the husks open when fully ripe (though still firm to the touch)! Nice sweet/tart flavors.
NOTE: Unlike tomatoes, tomatillos are not self-pollenizing. You must grow two together to ensure fruit set; if you plan to save seeds, they must be of the same variety.
