What does OMRI-Listed mean? OMRI Listed – or, approved – products have met the strict requirements set by the Organic Materials Review Institute and may be used in Organic Gardening according to the USDA National Organic Program guidelines. It’s sort of like the “Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval” for the gardening world!
Garden Containers
ORGANIC EARTHBOX GARDEN KIT
We love gardening in our 42 EarthBoxes so much, we’ve devoted a whole page to them! The Complete Organic EarthBox Kit contains all you will need for a bountiful harvest, including Organic Dolomite Lime (calcium) which all plants need - especially Tomatoes, Peppers and Summer Squash, which are prone to Blossom End Rot - Organic Plant Food for the entire season, the aeration screen, watering tube, and 2 plastic mulch covers.
The EarthBox measures 29” L x 13.5” W x 11 H. and accommodates 2 cubic feet of potting mix – or exactly 3 bags of our Black Gold Waterhold Potting Soil. The water reservoir holds 3 gallons of water, which is “topped off” regularly through the water tube.
As the water “wicks up” through the soil, the fertilizer gradually releases from the top down, into the area around the plant roots. With this patented, award-winning system, you will never again fertilize after the initial planting, and there are virtually no weeds because the mulch cover prevents them! The cover also holds in moisture and soil warmth and prevents rain from washing away the fertilizer. And as long as the water reservoir is kept full, you can never over water or under water, eliminating that guesswork entirely.
*** REPLANTING FOR THE NEW SEASON ***
When it's time for your next crop, simply remove the mulch cover and the old plants & any large root strands. Also remove a couple inches of the soil, loosening the rest. Add 2 cups Worm Castings, 2 cups Compost, and more of the Black Gold Potting Soil. If you're planting Tomatoes or Peppers this time, also add 2 cups of Dolomite Lime. Then "chop" in the 2" deep fertilizer channel (in the front of the Box if Tomatoes; down the center if Peppers, Corn, Beans, etc.), pour in 3 cups Organic Fertilizer. Then make the mound over the fertilizer with Potting Soil, make sure everything has been watered through, and put on a fresh cover. It's so easy to go from season to season in an EarthBox!
Once you begin gardening in the EarthBox, you will definitely want more of them. They’re tidy, attractive, practically fool-proof and resource-saving. Soils and Amendments
TIPS:
The most common raised bed size is 4' x 8' x 1' deep. For that you will need: 17 bags Black Gold Natural & Organic Potting Soil, 4 bags Black Gold Organic Compost & 8 Bags Black Gold Worm Castings.
Each new planting season, add at least a 2" top layer of Amendments to boost soil vitality. For that you will need: 4 bags Organic Compost & 5 bags Worm Castings. Simply loosen the soil (without "tilling"), pour out the Castings, then the Compost, and gently "rake" it together with your fingers or a long-tined rake. Water well before planting.
BLACK GOLD WATERHOLD POTTING SOIL — OMRI Listed
It all starts with great soil, and Black Gold Waterhold Potting Soil is our choice. OMRI-Listed and blended with coconut coir and sustainably-grown Canadian peat, this rich, fluffy soil retains moisture like crazy.
